Easy to Follow House Cleaning Tips

Having a clean and tidy house not only looks good to guests, it also makes us feel better. In fact, how clean your house is has a direct effect on your mental health. Untidiness can increase feelings of anxiety and depression, and leave us feeling overwhelmed about small tasks.

Tackling an entire house can be daunting. However, there is a better way to keep your space clean–and usually in less than 30 minutes per day. First, consider these tips to help you get on a schedule and stick with it.

  • Clean out the clutter. Decluttering will greatly reduce the amount of time you spend cleaning. Don’t attempt to set a cleaning schedule until you get dispose of, donate, or properly store anything that you no longer need or that is taking up space on tables and floors.
  • Make a space for everything, no matter how small. If you haven’t donate or disposed of it, the item should have a place it “lives,” whether in a cabinet, drawer or shelf.
  • Pick up three items every time you enter a room. Once you know where everything goes, if you find it out of place, pick it up and put it away as you pass. Clutter can get out of hand quickly, and if you abide by this system, you’ll stay on top of it before it overwhelms you. Teach other family members to follow this rule as well.
  • Have cleaning supplies in every bathroom and on every floor. When you’re motivated to clean, you don’t want to have to walk all the way downstairs to find some cleaning supplies. Keep extras in the laundry room, kitchen, bathrooms, closets and anywhere else it makes sense. For example, you can keep cleaning wipes next to the sink in the bathrooms for quick cleanups.
  • Write out your schedule and organize by room. Breaking your schedule down into rooms and focusing on one room a day makes it a little easier to stay on a routine. You never want to feel overwhelmed; instead, you should designate a time each day to do a quick clean. Practice this for one month and it will become a habit.
  • Talk to your family about the plan. Make sure family members are on board with the plan. If you can clean a room in 30 minutes on your own and you have a family of four people, that reduces your time to less than 10 minutes if everyone pitches in. Plus, this is a great way to teach children to organize their own cleaning schedules.

We've Done The Hard Park: Stick To This House Cleaning Schedule

Here is a sample schedule for you to use and adapt into your own cleaning routine. If you tackle these spaces regularly, you shouldn’t have to spend more than 30 minutes per day cleaning.

Sunday: Laundry day. This is a great day to wash sheets and clothing. That way, you’ll have the clothes you need for work and school, and your bedding will be fresh for the rest of the week. Don’t forget to throw in any bathroom rugs, kitchen towels, and pet beds. Tip: Before you put away your clean clothes, make it a goal to donate five items that you no longer like from your closet. This will help keep your closet neat and organized. This day will likely take you more than 30 minutes, but you can fold laundry while you watch movies, help the kids with homework, or listen to a great podcast.

Monday: Kitchen day. While counters and dishes should be attended to daily, we don’t usually set aside time to deep clean. Monday is a great day to take 15 minutes to deep clean one item of the kitchen, whether it be the refrigerator, oven or microwave. You can also spend a couple of minutes getting rid of a few unnecessary items that might be lingering on the counters or in the junk drawers.

Tuesday: Bathroom day. Again, make sure you are wiping down surfaces every day. Tip: Keep a container of cleaning wipes in the bathroom cabinet so you can quickly wipe away scum and toothpaste from sinks and counters every night. Then save this day to deep clean showers and toilets.

Wednesday: Living and office spaces. Typically, these spaces need a quick tidying of the desk and table areas, plus a wipe down with a cleaning spray and rag. You can straighten pillows and fold blankets, put away any items that weren’t properly stored, and dispose of any clutter. Vacuum, sweep or mop to finish the area, and don’t forget to dust picture frames, computers and televisions.

Thursday: Mudroom and garage. These rooms often get neglected. Make sure to spend at least one day a week organizing shoes and toys, sweeping out dirt and debris, and donating or disposing of items that no longer fit or that you don’t need.

Friday: Bedroom Day. Use this day to remove clutter, tidy up your closet space, dust, vacuum, and wipe down windows with a glass cleaner.

Saturday: This is often the day people host parties and gatherings. Use the morning to tidy up anything you missed during the week, and to freshen up the bathroom that guests will use. Clean up the entry way to your house, dust and mop.
